Something is different this year in the German Bundesliga. It is not the second ranked team from Munich nor the third ranked Stuttgart that seem to be the big surprise. I am neither talking about the many coaches dismissed by their teams nor about the consideration of some players to go to Qatar and play for the national team. It is this new face at the very top of the division: Werder Bremen. What is wrong this year? The team from the far north is as successful as never before. They went through an unbelievable streak: they have not lost since 14 games.
The last time Werder lost was in October against Dortmund. However the astonishing thing about Werder this year is that they came out of winter break as well as they had finished the first leg of this season. Their constancy is surprising especially as they presented themselves rather weak in the second leg in the past. This year Bremen seems to have found the proper recipe. With the unbelievable Ailton as a forward goals are guaranteed. The midfield players, above all French native Johan Micoud, are probably the most creative in the league. The exemplary team play turns Werder Bremen into the number one prospect for the championship this year. The only serious pursuer, Bavaria Munich, is not as dominating as throughout the last years and other top teams have already dropped out of the race for the championship. Borussia Dortmund suffers from a lot of injuries and is meanwhile highly indebted. Although having the best defense in the league, the VFB Stuttgart is not a candidate for the championship anymore. Stuttgart seemed really promising throughout the first leg of the season but their forwards have recently troubles hitting the goal. More than a championship rank is not realistic for the young team that recently lost against Chelsea London in the round before the quarter final. Werder Bremen has the best initial position before the last ten games. While the north celebrates, Bavaria fears not to win a single trophy this year. Bremen still has the chance to make the double and win both, the German Bundesliga and the cup – let us pray they will do it.
