A Trip to the Capital
The German Parliament invited us, the class 9e of the High School Ulricianum from Aurich, to undertake an excursion to Berlin in January 2004. In the focus of our four-day trip was the attendance of the Reichstag and a discussion with a member of the Bundestag, Thilo Hoppe from the Greens.

Accommodated in a central convenient youth guesthouse, we could easily reach desired places in Berlin with the rapid-transit railway or the underground. The first evening we went to the brightly illuminated Brandenburger Tor, which is one of the most popular sights - especially by night.
In the morning of our second day we undertook a trip to the wall museum “Bernauer Straße” where we got a lot of interesting information.

Worth seeing was a part of the Berlin Wall which is still in a good condition, too. It is to be found in front of the museum and still stands there in the way it was built. In the afternoon of this day we had time to explore the city of Berlin on our own. Afterwards, we visited the Jewish Museum. The building has different areas and stories each showing different parts of Jewish history – very impressing. The two museums are really recommendable as they both show important parts of the German history. During the third day we went to the Lower House of the German Parliament to attend a debate. After that we had a conversation with Mr Hoppe, the representative of our constituency in the Parliament. We asked him about his work, especially about current developments in politics and the sate visits in Africa where he accompanied the Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. After the conversation he led us through the Parliament.

Another highlight of the tour was the glass cupola of the Reichstag where we had a great view of Berlin. With a lot of impressions we continued with a sightseeing coach tour. We were able to visit famous places like the “Alexanderplatz” and the “Gerdarmenmarkt”. On the last day we were offered a private guided tour by our two teachers Mr. Lange and Mr. Sineux.

Generally speaking, our trip to Berlin was a very exciting and eventful experience which we will keep in our minds for a long time.
