Featuring Europe
On the 1st of May 2004 Poland and nine other countries will become members of the European Union. Accession to the EU gives great possibilities for a fast economic and infrastructural progress. It gives the chance to get access to modern technologies more easily and causes opportunities for improving social conditions. Joining the EU permits duty-free flow of goods which will reduce the prices of cars and home electronics. Travelling will be easier and less time-consuming.

Union also means the possibility of getting education or jobs abroad. That is what the youth connects their biggest hopes with. Favourable changes in investment law will create new workplaces by foreign capital flowing into Poland. It will cause the decline of unemployment and will rise the Polish standard of living.
Despite the promising perspectives, worries concerning the membership still exist in the Polish society. While the prices of basic products like food will increase, earnings are not expected to increase likewise. This development might cause a growing poverty.
Our farmers are afraid of not being able to compete with their partners from the EU as Poland’s agriculture received too low subsides from Brussels and therefore is insufficiently developed. The Polish producers are not sure if they are up to the high quality requirements.
If they are not able to fulfill them they simply will not get access to the Union’s markets.
The matter of purchasing ground by foreigners causes doubts. Parts of the society feel like in some cases the country could lose its independence.
In spite of all drawbacks Poles have already decided to join the European Community.
They want to take part in building the modern civilization on the continent.
