ulricianumtimes.de _ school: Chess tournament for the county Weser-Ems in Oldenburg
[ Christina Riechers ] Again a full success for the Ulricianum: The girls’ team won on March 6th with the lead of one point before the Gymnasium Brake. We were able to interview one of the five winners, Barbara Schunicht:
TUT: Since when have you been playing chess? B. S.: Since 1997. When I was in third grade I took part in the East Frisian Championships for the first time. TUT: How long have you been playing chess at school in the Chess-AG? B. S.: Since the first semester of the 7th grade, when the AG consisted of 7 students. TUT: How many people were on the team on Wednesday and how was the team put together? B. S.: The teams were composed of five students and were divided by gender. TUT: How did the tournament work? B. S.: Everybody had to play equally often in four areas, one preliminary play-off had to be won. TUT: What is the title exactly called that you’ve won? B. S.: Weser-Ems-Champion 2002. TUT: What were your expectations? Did you count on the victory? B. S.: No, we didn’t even think we would come as far as the East Frisian Championships. TUT: Did you qualify for any other championships through this victory? B. S.: Because of the victory we can take part in the Lower Saxony Championships. A German Championship for chess doesn’t exist, because there aren’t enough teams.
